Connect Instagram messages
Show your Instagram direct messages in the dashboard inbox: Instagram account ID, access token, app secret and the webhook.
What it is#
This connects your Instagram business account to the Chat inbox. Direct messages from people arrive in the dashboard and you answer there.
What you need#
- An Instagram Professional account (Business or Creator) and a Meta app.
- Three values: Instagram account ID, Access token and App secret.
- For people outside your own team to be answered, Meta must approve your app (app review) for
instagram_business_manage_messages. Messaging itself is free from Meta for normal use.
Where to find your keys#
- 1
The account ID
Make sure your Instagram account is a Professional account. Find its Instagram account ID in your Meta app, in the Instagram setup area, and copy it into Instagram account ID.
- 2
An access token
In your Meta app generate an access token for that account with the messaging permission
instagram_business_manage_messages. Copy it into Access token. - 3
The app secret
In the app open Settings, then Basic, and copy the App secret into the App secret field.
What Jukto does#
- Your token and app secret are stored encrypted for this website only. The account ID is a setting.
- The page shows your Callback URL and Verify token, and the fields to subscribe to:
messages,messaging_postbacksandmessaging_seen. - Each incoming message is checked against your app secret, then saved once. Jukto also looks up the sender's name and picture from Meta.
- You reply from the Chat page within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After that Instagram allows no reply until the customer writes again.
- Test connection asks Meta for your Instagram username and shows it when the token works.
Test and turn on#
- 1
Open the provider page
Go to Tools, open Integrations, choose Chat, then Instagram and press Set up (it says Manage once you have started).
- 2
Fill in the fields and save
Paste each value into the field with the same name, then press Save. A secret value is stored encrypted, and afterwards only its last four characters are shown.
- 3
Test the connection
Press Test connection. Jukto asks Instagram whether the saved values work and shows whether it worked and, if not, what Instagram answered. The test uses the saved values, so save first.
- 4
Connect Meta to Jukto
In your Meta app add Instagram > API setup with Instagram login, and open Webhooks. Paste the Callback URL and the Verify token from the Jukto page and subscribe to the fields listed there. The app must be set to Live.
- 5
Turn on
Press Turn on. Until then your website does not use it. Turn off stops it again and your saved values stay.
- 6
Send yourself a message
From an Instagram account that has a role on the app, send a direct message to your account. It should appear in the Chat inbox within moments.
Common errors#
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| Meta answered: check the access token | The token is wrong or expired. Make a new access token with the messaging permission and replace it. |
| Only my team can message, customers get no answer | Until Meta approves instagram_business_manage_messages for your app, only people with a role on the app can message the account. Finish Meta's app review. |
| No message arrives in the inbox | Check that the account is a Business or Creator account, that the app is Live, that the Callback URL and Verify token match the page, and that the App secret is right. |
| More than 24 hours have passed since the customer's last message. | Instagram only allows a reply within 24 hours. You can answer when the customer writes again. |
