Variants: size, colour and more
Sell one product in several options such as size and colour. Each combination gets its own price, stock, SKU, picture and weight.
Use variants when one product comes in options, for example a panjabi in sizes M, L and XL and in blue and white. Buyers pick their options on the product page, and the price and availability follow the combination they chose.
Before you start#
- You are editing a product: Add a product.
- The Attributes and variants tool is on (it is on for a new website).
- Upload the product pictures first, if you want a different picture for each colour.
Set up variants#
- 1
Choose the product type
In Basic info set Product type to With variants.
- 2
Pick an attribute
In Variants use Pick an attribute and choose, for example, Size. You can use up to 5 attributes (for example Size, Colour, Material).
- 3
Tap the values you sell
Tap each value you sell (S, M, L, XL). Select all and Clear all speed it up. Missing a value? Press + New value and type it, or + New attribute to create a new attribute with its values separated by commas (for example S, M, L).
- 4
Fill the variant table
The editor builds a Variant table with one row for every combination, up to 30 rows. For each row set the Selling price, Regular price, Cost, Set stock, Image and Weight (g).
- 5
Save time with bulk fields
Apply to all variants fills a price, stock, regular price or cost for every row at once with Same price for all or Same stock for all. You can still edit a row afterwards.
What the variant table holds#
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Variant | The combination, for example M / Blue |
| Selling price | What the buyer pays. Must be above 0 to publish |
| Regular price | The normal price, shown struck through when the selling price is lower |
| Cost | Your private cost price. A warning shows when you sell below cost |
| Set stock | How many you have. Leave it empty if you do not count this variant |
| Image | One of the product's images (add images first) |
| Weight (g) | Used by shipping rules that charge by weight |
What buyers see#
The Variant picker on the product page shows the options as buttons, a dropdown, or one row per option with picture or colour swatches, depending on how the page is designed. The price, picture and availability follow the chosen combination. A landing page can be made for one specific variant: Landing pages.
Common problems#
I cannot publish
Every variant needs a selling price above 0, and a stock quantity if you count stock. The completeness panel names what is missing.
I need more than 30 combinations
A product holds up to 30 variants. Split it into two products, or drop values you do not sell.
A value I need is missing
Press + New value and type it.
