Investment: partners, shares and profit split
Record who put money into the business, each partner share, money put in and taken out, and split the profit after every period.
Use Investment when more than one person put money into the business, or when you are the single owner-investor. Everything stays traceable to a partner.
Before you start#
Switch on the Investment part in Accounting settings (one tool slot). Only people with the Accounting investment permission, and the owner, see this page.
Set up partners#
- 1
Open Accounting > Investment
An empty page asks Who invested in this business?
- 2
Choose how you start
If you are the only investor, press I am the only investor to be set up with 100%. Otherwise press Add partner for each one.
- 3
Give every partner a share
Press Change shares. The shares must add up to exactly 100%, and Applies from says from which day the new shares count. Closed periods keep the shares they were closed with.
- 4
Choose how often you split the profit
Under Split the profit pick Every month or Every year. A year runs from the month set in Accounting settings.
Money in, money out, profit split#
| Action | What it is | Counts as |
|---|---|---|
| Put money in | Capital a partner adds. The money comes into the account you pick | Not profit and not income |
| Take money out | A drawing. The money goes out of the account you pick | Not an expense |
| Close period | Freezes the period's profit and splits it by shares | Allocates profit; no cash moves |
After a period is closed, partners take their share out later as a drawing. The totals on the page are Capital put in, Drawings taken out, Profit allocated and Owed to partners.
Close a period#
- 1
Find the ended period under Profit periods
A period shows Not closed, Reopened or Closed. A running period shows the profit so far, not frozen yet.
- 2
Press Close period
Add an optional note.
- 3
Press Close and split
The profit is frozen and How it was split shows each partner's part. A loss is split the same way.
Statements and corrections#
- Statement shows one partner's opening balance, entries (money put in, money taken out, profit share) and closing balance for a date range.
- Reopen removes the split so the period can be closed again with a fresh figure. Only the owner can reopen, and the reason (at least 3 letters) is kept in the audit trail.
Common problems#
"This period has not ended yet."
You can close a period only after its last day.
I cannot change how often I split the profit.
A period is reopened. Close it again first.
Where is the owner's own money?
Add the owner as a partner (This partner is the store owner) and record Put money in and Take money out for them.
